At Last, Love and Equality Prevail!
At last, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Justice Kennedy, writing for the majority in a 5-4 opinion, stated loud and clear, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. … [The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” Kennedy Kennedy further wrote, “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.” “Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.”
The usual dissenters led by Justice Scalia mocked the majority’s opinion with vitriol as being “pretentious” and “egotistic.” The dissenters’ opinions will garner no further recognition here. This great day will not be soured by the archaic opinions of those who do not stand for equality, justice, and love for all.
Today’s outcome is the result of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally. Thank you to all those people who fought tirelessly for a right that should never have required fighting for in the first place. Equality for all, always, and forever!
